Hey friends! Welcome back to my blog this amazing Tuesday!
I saw a few people doing a tie-dye activity with their kids some weeks ago and I wanted to try it with a MICKEY! Remember that tie-dye (in general) is kind of just whatever the colors do when you add them to the piece of clothing! You get what you get basically. It is so fun and a perfect activity to do at home with your significant other or with kids! I highly recommend trying to do a tie-dye Mickey shirt!
Without further ado, let’s get started! Making a tie-dye Mickey shirt is fairly easy - it’s how you position your item of clothing that can make it difficult.
The tie-dye coloring product I used are shown below. Click the photo to find on amazon and purchase!
Then, you need to have pieces of clothing that are 100% cotton and WHITE. The reason being, when the clothes are spandex or other types of fabric, the tie-dye rolls off and sometimes doesn’t even absorb properly and you waste some of the color product. So just make sure you have pieces of clothing that are 100% cotton and white to make a tie-dye Mickey Shirt. Examples below.
Then, you choose your colors. I chose the blue, pink, green, and yellow. From experience, the purple is very vibrant and super permanent. Eventually the yellow and green kind of fade and the purple does not. I chose the pink for the Mickey because it has the exact same qualities the purple does so if you’re not a pink person than choose blue or purple for the tie-dye Mickey.
Make sure you have all your products out and ready to go before you start because the tie-dye is super permanent on your hands and can stain anything else. I did this activity outside on the cement and on cardboard.
Ok, this part is super important. THE TIE-DYE MICKEY. Depending on the type of clothing - shorts, shirt, toddler or kids clothes, etc. Really lay the item down as flat as possible and analyze where you want the mickey to lay. Then, first picture where you want the ears and how big you want them. Grab, pinch, and twist the section you want for the ears and rubber band those as tight as you can. Do the same for the Mickey head. This will be the FIRST THING you Tie-dye.
Grab your color for your Tie-Dye Mickey and paint away. Photo below for preference. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to really absorb the color. It’s ok if droplets of the color fall! It’s tie-dye!
Then, scrunch your shirt into a ball and pinch certain sections to start putting rubber bands around the entire shirt. Picture below.
Color away!
Once you’ve colored your ball, let it sit for 45 minutes. If you let it sit longer, the colors will be more vibrant, the short you let it sit, the more pastel like the colors will be.
After you’ve let it sit, open up the rubber bands and take a look at your shirt. Do you like how it looks? still too much white? I personally wanted more color ** example below ** so I scrunched it up again and rubber banded it again and started to add more color - again! haha. IF YOU DECIDE TO DO THIS STEP - let it sit another 30-40 minutes.
The messier part to your Tie-Dye Mickey comes NOW! Take apart your items and completely remove ALL of the rubber bands - even the Tie-Dye Mickey rubber bands.
Now, rinse it out! You have to rinse it out completely until the water is clear! Photo below for preference **water was not clear yet**.
NEXT - throw straight into the wash WITH NO OTHER CLOTHES and laundry soap. I personally did this tiny load on a SUPER LARGE load for the extra water and wash and also so it would rinse thoroughly. I also did an extra rinse after I washed. I did not photograph me washing my clothes because why… ahahah
After the load is done, HANG DRY. I don’t know what happens personally if you throw the tie-dye into the dryer but it is cotton so it WILL shrink. lol Just hang dry!
Then, TADAAAAAA!!!! Isn’t it sooo beautiful and so vibrant!!! This was so much fun for me and my little babe! I hope this was easy to follow and fun to make! Don’t forget to use the hashtag #mermaidcoloursplash and I would LOVE to feature you on my page and stories! xoxo
See you next week! I will be starting up a newsletter soon for my blog so please be sure to look out for that so you can enter your email! Thank you!
We love you guys so much!
